James Squire India Pale Ale
Everything an India pale ale should be: bitter and strong. And on top of that, it's pretty tasty, too. Copper/golden color and a head that clings to the glass.

Heineken Lager
Gold. Thin head. But a bit of a dirty nose and a dirty finish. A bit dodgy. Geoff, Oliver and guest reviewer Mellas all described it, independently, as bland. Mellas: The best of the industrials.

Hazards Dark
Heady. Color is more like a mild ale; deep copper. We began drinking it too cold; it got better as it got warmer. Amazing head.

Haywards 5000
Dicey. Dirty.

Hahn Premium Lager
A good sessional beer. Tasty, and so much better than the other Australian “premium” beers.

Gilde Pilsener
Brewed to the German purity law. Immediately appealing, says guest review Mellas. Geoff: An archetypal German lager. Oliver: A really nice beer. Golden color, beautiful nose. While tasting this, we wondered: Have you ever tasted a bad German beer. The answer was a resounding “no”.

Cascade Summer Blonde
Summer beer, summer fruit - passionfruit, melon. Nice.

Burke's Original Hemp-Filtered Premium Ale
Rating based on the fact that it doesn't taste bad, but it doesn't taste. Lisa and Oliver both likened this to Victoria Bitter, which isn't good.

Boar's Rock Premium Lager
Weak and sweet. Very, very, very sweet, with nothing to balance it. Needs to be hopped up and needs a yeast that will ferment more of the maltiness. A soapy beer. Geoff: “It's the kind of beer that you want to add salt and pepper.” Lisa: “A ladies' beer.”

Asahi Super Dry
Golden color, with a good head. Bright. A clean lager, as opposed to a dirty lager. Guest reviewer Mellas: “A quality brew.”

Young's Waggledance Honey Beer
Good beer. So much better than Beez Neez, but that wouldn't be hard.

Young's Double Chocolate Stout
Not as chocolatey as it could be. A nice stout, but doesn't taste like a chocolate stout; where's the chocolate? Does go well with Tim Tams. There's no such thing as a bad stout.

Coopers Premium Ale
The most disappointing Cooper's beer. Remembered as once being a great beer that would have rated four stars. Was malty and full-bodied with notes of honey. Now, well, insipid.

On January 7, this is an early contender for Beer of the Year. Smells like the terra rossa. Earthy and tasty.

Pike's New Sparkling Oakbank Beer
A pretty good beer. On the verge of being a sessional. Can't really say much about it.

Moosehead Canadian Lager
A dangerously sessional beer. You could drink 50 of them without knowing. Has that distinctive … North American lager … taste. Very, very pale.

Miller Genuine Draft
“Oh, Ohhhhhh, Oh.”: Geoff (doubling over). This is crap beer. Initially we thought the beer was out of date. But we were wrong. Geoff thought this beer was “foul”. Oliver, however, thought it was “drinkable”.

Lowenbrau Original
We tasted this immediately after the Miller Genuine Draft and Moosehead Canadian Lager.
Geoff: “Now that's a nice lager. Nice creamy head. Nothing zingy or metallic or off about it.”
The color is gold rather than the yellow of the previous beers we tried. Still quite pale though. A nice beer.

La Chouffe La Blonde d'Ardenne
Very good. A champagne beer.

Hofbrau Original
Freshly mowed lawns. Cow pat-covered fields. Bavarian milking maids. A very clean lager. An ale-lover's lager.
